HOMEWORK
Homework in first grade is designed to reinforce and enrich what is taught in the classroom. At the beginning of each week students will receive a homework packet that should be returned each Friday. The following is a general idea of what to expect with our homework system.
The homework packet will consist of the following:
1. a cover letter
2. reading log
3. daily reading & spelling assignments
Cover Letter: The cover letter provides a list of assignments due on Friday with a suggested schedule to complete tasks. Our hope is that by providing most of the material at the beginning of the week, families can help to instill time management skills with their first grader. For example, helping a child realize that if he/she has a soccer game on Thursday it might be a good idea to get ahead on the homework earlier in the week.
Reading Log: Students should read their AR books (at least until they meet their goal each quarter) for 10 minutes each night. Until the student is a fluent reader this should be done with an adult or older sibling that can help check for comprehension and fluency along the way.
Daily Reading Assignments: A story will be presented each week that will have daily activities to accompany it. Rereading passages can help with fluency and comprehension.
Math: Students will receive daily math homework. These assignments must be completed and returned the next day. This homework is directly correlated with the math taught each day. Everyone will receive the on-level math assignments. On the reverse side, students will receive either enrichment or reinforcement math problems based on their progress throughout the daily lesson.
